Deyrul Zafaran Monastery

Deyruzzaferan Monastery, located 3 km east of Mardin, is an Assyrian monastery built in the 5th century and is one of the important centers of the Assyrians. The important structures of the monastery are Mor Hananyo Church (Domed Church), Saints House (Beth Kadise), Virgin Mary Church and Sun Temple. Inside the monastery, there is a historical Syriac Bible and a sacred stone, and it is said that the first medical school was founded here. Mosaics from the period when it was founded are still standing today. One of the greatest features of the monastery, which resembles a living history, is that it contains the tombs of 52 Syriac patriarchs.

Deir al-Zafaran Monastery became one of nine churches and monasteries in Tur Abdin, which was included in the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO in 2021.
